The Los Angeles Theatre ensemble

Read for the Record!

On Sunday, April 25, 2010 a group of intrepid actors from the Los Angeles Theatre Ensemble will try to break the record for the longest, continuous, marathon reading of Shakespeare’s work. Participants will read the entire canon of Shakespeare’s plays around the clock for up to five days.

Like a walk-a-thon for theatre lovers, readers will get sponsors to underwrite their participation in the event. All proceeds from this event will support performances of A Midsummer Night’s Dream this summer, so that LATE may present this production on the Powerhouse Theatre’s redwood deck at no-cost to the public. Audience members will experience the work of some of LA’s finest emerging theatre artists in the uniquely intimate outdoor setting of the Powerhouse’s redwood deck, and will have the opportunity to mix and mingle with the artists after each production- enhancing their appreciation and understanding of their work.

By providing free Shakespeare on the Deck the Ensemble can engage underserved audiences in innovative ways- not only by removing financial barriers to their attendance, but by literally upending the notion of what the theatre-going experience can be--not stiff, formal and quiet--but relaxed, raucous and participatory.
